With Gift Aid, you can make your donation go even further without it costing you a penny.
What’s Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a scheme run by the government, which allows charities to claim the basic rate tax from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on every pound donated.
This means that for every £1.00 you donate to Swanswell, we can claim an extra 25p at no extra cost to you. For example, if you donate £10.00, we can claim an extra £2.50 - making your gift worth £12.50.
How does Gift Aid work?
When you make a donation, either online or offline, you’ll see a Gift Aid declaration which will tell you about Gift Aid and ask you if you want to Gift Aid your donation. To Gift Aid your donation, just tick the tick box and fill in your details. Swanswell can then claim the tax back on your donation from HMRC.
Am I eligible for Gift Aid?
You’re eligible for Gift Aid if you’re a UK tax payer. You must also pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax that is at least equivalent to the tax Swanswell and other charities you donate to will claim for that tax year (06 April to 05 April), otherwise you will be responsible for paying the difference. Council Tax and VAT don’t count.
Even if you’re not employed, you’re still eligible for Gift Aid if you’re paying tax on:
- personal or occupational pension
- stocks and shares
- bank and building society savings accounts
- rental income
- overseas and UK investment dividends
